Hot!!

It's already been a long, hot and dry summer and it's only early July!! The garden survived our Alaska vacation. Many thanks to a few great friends and family who came out to tend it while we were gone. The tomatoes unfortunately developed and great deal of blight. I've worked this week trimming and pulling the worst affected out. There are a lot of tomatoes on the vine, hopefully we'll still have a great harvest in a few weeks. The cherry tomatoes are coming in now. The melons are looking good as is the winter squash and sweet potatoes. If we can get a little more rain we should have a good late summer harvest.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please let me know. You can also email me at jmiesfeldt@bellsouth.net.

Early Summer......

The high heat has really put an early end to a lot of the spring greens. The greens mix, spinach, turnips, arugula and some of the lettuces are beginning to bolt. But it also means we will have summer veggies early. The squash looks beautiful and has a lot of blossoms and tiny fruit. The potatoes are really good this spring...very smooth and buttery. The onions are so sweet and mild...no crying when you slice them!

The bee hives are coming back this week thanks to our beekeeper Jeff Friend! They have a lot of work to do. It's sad that the neighborhood bees have really dropped off in the last few years and we have to bring in extras to get everything pollinated.

This Week's Harvest

The garden is looking more and more full each week. We have transplanted about 70 Heirloom tomato plants, 40 peppers, 30 eggplants and have numerous varieties of squash, beans, cucumbers, onions, potatoes, melons coming up strong. I'll post the varieties on this site later this week so you know what's coming up later in the season.

The biggest disappointment has been the peas this spring. The germination rate was horrible. I replanted some Sugar Snaps and they look great. Hopefully they will bear before it gets too hot. I'll have some English peas to sell, but not nearly as many as I had hoped.... We'll try a fall crop and hope for better success.

First Harvest

The garden is ready for it's first harvest this week. The Swiss Chard that overwintered looks beautiful. There is a little mouse that keeps eating the roots so I'm hoping that the other beds planted this spring will be ready before the mouse finishes this whole bed! The arugula and spinach are tender and make great salads. The peas are blooming and looking healthy. I'm hoping in another few weeks we'll have some young English peas to share.

Hope you enjoy the spring greens!

Early Spring

Welcome Spring!!! It's been a long cold winter here. I'm more than ready for spring this year. I've been busy preparing beds, planting lots of vegetables, starting seedlings inside and already pulling weeds...my favorite! This list above is what we have planned for this year's spring offerings. I already have peas, arugula, greens and radishes up. I'm hopeful that if the weather cooperates, we'll be ready to sell again in about 5-6 weeks, maybe sooner...

I have collards ready now and a little Swiss Chard and Spinach that overwintered. I don't have delivery set up yet but just let me know and you can either come out to the farm or we'll try to arrange something.

I'll be sending out an email soon with more details and delivery options. If you did not receive emails last year, please let me know if you want to be included. My email address is listed under About Me section.
